‘Mr. Clean’ sweeps 8-Cock Derby at Sunset
It was a clean sweep for the “Mr. Clean” entry at Sunset.
Leroy and Elayne Stembridge (Texas) and Karl Slichert (Ohio) combined and won 8 straight fights in the 8-cock Filipino derby at Sunset April 22–23. Karl performed the General Gense test work and pitted by Leroy. They used a red knife. Cecil, Brian, and Phillip Stembridge assisted Leroy in tending duties.
Second-day winners with 7-1 scores each were Dan Gray and Jimmy Johnson whose entries scored 4-0 the first day and 3-1 the second day, and Nolan Bourque and Joe Lopez who scored 3-1½ each day for 7-1 overall.
First Day Winners, 4-0:
- PIG IRON, pitted by Jim Steele, fighting PI iron cocks bred by Jim. Maxie Magallones tied the knife and pitted.
 The entry won over Rock Springs, Mississippi-Hawaii, T & K, and Cobra-Hummingbird.
- Mac White and Calvin Hux and Wayne Ajimura won over Paul Manci, Galvani, Mississippi-Hawaii, and Kinkade. Mac fed and Wayne tied the knife. Mac also pitted the aces.
- RJU #2 and Billy Abbott feeding and pitting the Ronnie Howington cocks with Alton Powell assisting and tying the knife. They won over Hickory Forest, Bill and Jack, Cardinal Club-Indian Hills, and Jones-Bassett.
- Mr. Clean won over Max Wallace, Jones-Bassett, Ramms, and Travis.
 With 3-1 scores first day were Paul Manziel, Hila, and Mississippi-Alabama Combine. Three entries scored 3-1½: Denham-Hammonds, Cardinal Club-Indian Hills, and Joe and Nolan.

Second day winners, with identical 5-0 scores all, were “Black Gold”, Jackie Wilkerson and Indian Hills–Cardinal Club of Charlie and Timmy Thaggard. Indian Hills–Cardinal Club also won the 3-cock together with Charlie’s entry the second day (Sunday).
In the Joe Goode Memorial Filipino Knife Derby at Interstate Sports Club, Inc. in Hugo, Oklahoma, Charles Carr/Alabama Combine (composed of Sterling Smith, Tommy McCay, and John Browning) won the championship alone. It was an 8-cock event and Charles Carr/Alabama scored 7-1 overall.
